Written by Rick Nagy and Keith Skooglund (BMI)

Don’t want to get up this mornin’
Don’t want to give up my bed
This day came in just like a storm
I woke up with thunder in my head

There she was in her Sunday best
Folded arms on her dress
'Twas a little too worn and faded grey
Plastic flowers in the dirt where she’ll lay

‘Cause they never die, their petals rarely fall
They’ll never need the sun at all
Their colors barely fade, they keep on and on
And that’s why I’ve laid these plastic flowers next to her

Lived her life for better or worse
Looked for God in a strip mall church
Too late to find everything she’d lost
(She said) "the golden rule just 'aint worth the cost"

Nothing left but a broken chair
An empty room across the way
A little white bible with unread prayers
And plastic flowers in the dirt where she lay
